There’s a reason the phrase “spa-like bathroom” is used to attract buyers in the real-estate market. “The bathroom should be a true retreat at the end of a long day,” says Oak Cliff-based designer Dave Johnson, owner of interior firm Fabitat. If your bath space is feeling a little lackluster, there are simple and cost-effective ways to make some design upgrades — without spending the time or money required for a renovation. Johnson and designer Laura Christian of Laura Design & Co. spill their tips and tricks to transform your bathroom into a haven without the headache.

Change up your bathroom rugs and towels.
For a pop of color, Johnson recommends having fun with floor coverings. “I will often switch out a plain bathmat for a patterned rug that calls to the vibe of the rest of the home,” he says. “A machine washable runner will often do well for this, as bath layouts can be long and skinny. Be sure to get a cushy rubber pad for under it to keep it from slipping if it gets wet.” Jonathan Adler’s line for Ruggable (including the “Milano” style pictured above) is a good choice — the rugs resist water and stains, and they are machine washable.
Christian suggests keeping it neutral when it comes to towels. “I typically opt for white or neutral bath and hand towels,” she says. “My first choice is always 100% Turkish Aegean cotton because of its dreamily softness. Serena & Lily has some really great high-quality options.”

Create a luxury look in your shower.
“The overall mood for your shower should be relaxing, clean and tidy,” says Christian. “In order to create that spa-like vibe, I like to keep the shower niche simple by eliminating any unsightly bottles. You can transfer your shampoos, conditioners and body washes to brown apothecary glass bottles.” Looking for products that come beautifully packaged? “Aesop has some beautiful choices that definitely fit the aesthetic.” To get the look without glass, Sweet Water Decor has empty plastic bottles you can fill with your favorite products.
