Chevrolet is gearing up for a complete overhaul of the Traverse model after a decade and a half since its initial entry into the large three-row crossover market. This segment has experienced significant growth, expanding by over two and a half times during that time span. While some of this growth has been natural, with existing models gaining popularity, it has also seen a surge in new contenders like the Hyundai Palisade, Kia Telluride, and VW Atlas, according to a report.
The Traverse, which has seen only two generations since its inception, has remained largely unchanged since 2017. Consequently, Chevrolet is now preparing to introduce the fully redesigned 2024 Chevrolet Traverse early next year, as per the report in Forbes.
The unveiling of the new Traverse took place at a special event held at the Lansing Delta Township Assembly plant in Michigan, where the vehicle is manufactured alongside the Buick Envoy. It’s fair to say that, over the past decade, many crossovers, regardless of size, have exhibited strikingly similar designs, the Forbes report said.
However, in recent years, some automakers have begun to differentiate their models by adopting either a more car-like aesthetic or embracing a rugged, truck-like appearance that harkens back to traditional SUVs. Ford, for instance, pursued this approach by creating the Escape and the new Bronco Sport as distinct entities within its compact utility lineup. With the new Traverse, Chevrolet has taken a deliberate step towards a more truck-oriented design, particularly evident in the new Z71 trim.
Throughout its three generations, the Traverse has gradually transitioned from a sleeker and more aerodynamic look to a style more reminiscent of the body-on-frame Tahoe. The redesigned Traverse exhibits a notably bulkier and squared-off front end, featuring slim horizontal running lamps positioned above the corners and headlights placed below.
The entire front fascia adopts a more vertical orientation. Prominent creases along the sides accentuate the wheel openings, while the forward-leaning half C-pillar bears a striking resemblance to the latest Nissan Pathfinder. At the rear, the taillamps consist of two slender strips, with the upper one wrapping horizontally around the corner and the lower strip angling downward, similar to the upcoming Blazer EV.
Chevy Traverse 2024 Interior
The interior of the new Traverse draws inspiration from its smaller electric counterparts, the Equinox EV and Blazer EV, while incorporating its own unique design elements. The centerpiece is a landscape-oriented 17.7-inch infotainment touchscreen, housed in a similar manner to the EV models. Slightly overlapping the touchscreen is an 11-inch digital instrument cluster display. In contrast to the circular vents found in the Blazer, the Traverse features sleek horizontal vents for a more understated aesthetic. Keeping in line with recent GM vehicles, the infotainment system is built on Android Automotive, offering Google Automotive Services such as Assistant, Maps, and the Play Store. Additionally, the Traverse retains support for phone projection, enabling compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The cabin also boasts a range of advanced technologies, some of which come standard while others are available as optional features. Standard safety features include automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert, lane-keeping assistance, and pedestrian and cyclist braking, all of which rely on camera-based systems. Optional driver assistance features include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, and various other advanced functionalities.
An exciting addition to the Traverse for the upcoming year is the availability of Super Cruise hands-free driving, excluding the base LS trim. This includes automatic overtaking capability, the ability to function while towing a trailer, and lane change on demand.
