Swinerton strengthens Atlanta foothold with new exec, office expansion

by

Concord, California-based builder Swinerton is expanding in the Atlanta commercial construction market and adding a new executive to its team, according to a press release shared with Construction Dive.

Swinerton is adding Katayoon Alavian to its Atlanta office as the company’s director of special projects in the area, per the release. Alavian was previously at the company’s Los Angeles office, where she was a project executive.

During her construction career, Alavian has been involved in approximately $600 million in commercial projects, per the release. Alavian’s Special Projects group pursues construction opportunities primarily in aviation, hospitality, office and corporate services throughout metro Atlanta and Georgia.

In tandem with the executive announcement, Swinerton announced it will move to a new, 10,000-square-foot office in Atlanta’s Armour Yards business park this fall, according to the release. The new space features 22 private offices, 30 workstations, two flex rooms, two meeting rooms and a preconstruction room. A total of 53 Atlanta professionals will occupy the space, per Swinerton.

As many business leaders question the need for in-person workspace, Swinerton is investing in a new environment that promotes its corporate culture and accommodates its growing team.

“We believe you can’t build culture or comradery remotely,” said Derek Mosiman, vice president and division manager at Swinerton’s Atlanta office, in the release.

The Atlanta office, which opened in 2018, has constructed $358 million of commercial environments, according to the contractor. Swinerton expects the Atlanta division to top $150 million in revenue, a 130% increase year-over-year, according to the contractor.

The West Coast firm has enjoyed more success in the Southeast this year. In April, Swinerton absorbed personnel and took over the office space of a rival contractor, Indianapolis-based Shiel Sexton, in the Carolinas, following the closure of Shiel Sexton’s division in the area.

Swinerton’s move follows a trend of contractors expanding or moving office locations as they look to capitalize on growing demand. In June, Chicago-based contractor Nicholas & Associates opened its third office in Tampa, Florida, and Boston-based Shawmut unveiled its new New York City office in May.
