Skanska USA, the American arm of the Sweden-based contractor and developer, has inked a $834 million contract with the Washington state DOT to make operational improvements to 4.5 miles of the I-405 corridor in Bothell, Washington.
The goal of the work, dubbed “The I-405, Brickyard to SR 537 Improvement Project,” is to create a dual express toll lane from south of the I-405/SR 522 interchange to the I-405/SR 527 interchange.
The I-405-SR 167 corridor serves a growing region in the state, according to Washington DOT, and increases in population, business and jobs have placed higher demand on transportation systems. A major part of its transportation master plan, Washington DOT says, is to build the express toll lane from Puyallup to Lynnwood.
Project work will include new lanes, direct access ramps, infrastructure supporting the Stride Bus Rapid Transit program and new fish passage culverts.
The Sound Transit agency plans to make an inline station at a park and ride in Bothell, where it intends to launch the BRT along I-405. Work done by the improvement project will enable BRT vehicles to drive exclusively through the new express lanes, increasing reliability and reducing travel times.
Skanska will begin construction in November 2023, and anticipates delivery in late 2028. The contractor included the project in its U.S. order bookings for Q3.
