Go For It!
Many bathroom projects can be undertaken by a confident DIY weekend warrior. Taking the time to shop, budget and plan is key to the success of any DIY project, so make sure you take the time to do some research before jumping in. If you’re looking to do a quick turnaround in order to simply freshen up your baths in time for sale, check out your Realtor’s website for inspirational photos and ideas, or go to your local bathroom and kitchen remodeling store to get caught up on the latest trends. Here are some quick and easy ideas to give your bathroom a new lease on life.
1. Freshen up the paint – painting is one of the quickest and simplest ways to brighten a dingy bathroom. Choose white, or muted hues of green, blue or grey. Make sure the baseboards and any other trim is given a fresh coat of white paint as well. Clean, crisp and fresh colors work best.
2. Get creative with new lighting – depending on your level of electrical prowess and the design of your existing lighting, replacing outdated sconces or over counter lights with contemporary designs can brighten up any bathroom. Avoid harsh white LED bulbs, and instead go for bright, but warm, hues. If you have those 70’s style, above mirror track lights, consider employing an electrician to take them down and install sconces on the sides of your mirrors instead.
3. Retire the shower curtain – replace colored or worn shower curtains with clean, white, fabric, “waffle weave” curtains. Try to match your shower curtain bar and rings to the color of your bathroom fixtures. Also, remember to remove the plastic interior curtain and replace it with a “hotel style” white fabric, interior liner. No one likes an old moldy shower curtain when they’re thinking of purchasing your home.
4. Accessorize with class – this may seem picky, but add a nice, new liquid hand soap to your vanity! So many times, when I’m showing homes, I see old bars of soap in a soap dish, or even worse no soap, just hand sanitizer! After the pandemic and now entering flu season, investing in a nice liquid hand soap and sprucing up your bathroom accessories (think towels, tissue holders, perfume trays, toothbrush holders) goes a long way to creating a positive impression.
