A home decor pro has revealed five things you should consider when refreshing your space to make it feel more expensive.

Preston Konrad is a creative director based in New York best known for his appearances on the Today show as well as on Good Morning America, Rachel Ray and Access Hollywood.

He recommended layering up floor rugs, getting rid of ‘boob lights’ and mixing up textures to make a home look like it was curated by an interior designer.

The 39-year-old used to design retail spaces for high end brands and said layered rugs were a must when he styled Ralph Lauren stores.

‘It adds texture, it adds dimension, it makes your house just look a bit more curated,’ he said in an online video.

‘I don’t love when they’re super symmetrical, I like them a little uneven or on an angle,’ he added saying they look better slightly ‘askew’.

Preston said a ‘super easy’ way to start layering rugs is to use either a sisal or jute rug as the base.

Secondly, the designer said to get rid of ‘boob lights’, a dome-shaped ceiling sconce [wall-mounted light] many consider to now be outdated.

Preston gave a series of more modern options saying those wanting to replace the outdated light should go for ‘flush mount or semi flush mount lighting’.

‘If you’re a renter, take down the boob, put up your light and replace it before you leave,’ he said.

Preston’s third tip was to use Roman shades instead of blinds or curtains.
