Can you do home remodeling in winter? You can — and you should

by

The idea that you shouldn’t do home improvements in winter is a myth.

“There’s no reason not to do your project just because the weather’s gotten colder,” said Miles Wilkins, owner of The Board Store Home Improvements. “We’ve been here over 30 years and we’ve worked every winter on all home improvements, exterior and interior.”

A heavy snowstorm might stop work for a few days — but that also happens in summer when a rainstorm brings things to a halt. And hot weather can be harder to endure than cold. You can always dress more warmly in winter, but if you’re outdoors in summer, there’s no way to escape the heat.

In fact, winter can be the best time to start a home improvement project. Read on to find out why you should plan your next home renovation for the winter season.

Don’t wait until prices go up — and early next year they will

When it comes to home improvements, one thing is certain — the longer you wait, the more costs will rise.

“In our industry, the first quarter of the new year is when prices increase,” Wilkins said. “So the person who buys at the end of the year is getting the best price they possibly can. By spring, prices will certainly have gone up.”

What’s the best time to start a home improvement project?

Whatever your project, it’s a good idea to start as soon as possible.

Problems that need to be fixed only get worse with time and cause bigger problems. Take gutters, for example. If they’re in disrepair, it’s important to fix them as soon as possible, before they cause costly damage to your roofing.

Or maybe you simply want a more beautiful, more functional home —  a kitchen or bath remodel, new flooring, a sunroom or deck — don’t defer that dream.

“The best time to do any work on your home is now, because rather than waiting, you get to enjoy a benefit that will improve your quality of life,” said Wilkins.

Make sure your home is ready for winter

Some of the best projects to start right now are the ones that will keep your home warm, dry and cozy when the cold sets in.

“Windows, doors and insulated siding — these are the things that keep you from going through winter with drafts and chills,” Wilkins said. “And they not only make you more comfortable, they also conserve energy and keep your bills from shooting sky high.”

Choosing the right contractor for a winter project

Many companies work seasonally, laying people off and then hiring new people back when there’s a job to do — so the quality of the job will vary.

The Board Store Home Improvements doesn’t work that way.

“We have the same people working all winter that we have in summer,” said Wilkins. “So whatever the season, you’re getting the same professionalism we always provide.”

There’s another significant difference, too.

At most companies, work is done by subcontractors, which typically leads to delays, coordination problems and no-shows. With The Board Store Home Improvements, everything is perfectly coordinated because everything — installation, wiring, plumbing — is done by their own full-time staff, never by subcontractors.

Another reason to choose The Board Store Home Improvements? For many consecutive years, their customer satisfaction ratings have earned them a place on the GuildQuality list of the top 100 contractors nationwide. And in September, Wilkins was honored as a Legend of the Home Improvement Industry for his decades-long reputation for quality and trustworthiness.
