Award: Higher education STEM building
Value: $106 million
Location: Raleigh, North Carolina
Client: North Carolina State University

North Carolina State University — aka NC State — has tapped Skanska to build a new integrative sciences building for STEM education and research, the Sweden-based contractor announced Friday.

The total project budget is $136.7 million, but a release shared with Construction Dive said that the contract totaled $106 million, which the firm will include in its order bookings for the fourth quarter of 2023.

The 165,000-square-foot facility will feature a cafe, classrooms, teaching labs, research spaces, study spaces and office areas. The project will support studies and research in chemistry, biochemistry and biotechnology, according to Skanska.

“This new facility will contribute significantly to North Carolina State’s new Integrative Sciences Initiative and revitalize the marquee Brickyard, one of the nine hallowed places on the north campus,” said Mark Balling, executive vice president for Skanska’s building operations in North Carolina and Virginia.

Skanska has worked with NC State before, building Fitts-Woolard Hall, an engineering building; the Golden LEAF Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center; the James B. Hunt Jr. Library; and Engineering Building III.

Richmond, Virginia-based Moseley Architects will provide designs, and the project will seek LEED-Gold certification. Skanska anticipates delivering the facility in September 2026.
