In 2024, many popular looks from the past are coming back—and they’re better than ever. While some of these trends are subtle touches we’re likely to see trending on TikTok, something major will change in one of the most important rooms of the home. So what’s in? Read on to find out the trends interior designers predict will make a comeback in the coming year.

Wallpaper
Wallpaper has been coming back for several years right now, but 2024 will be the year it becomes an essential element of home decor. Betsy Burnham, founder and principal of Burnham Design, says, “For spaces that are in need of a true hero piece, turn to wallpaper to pack that extra punch. Coming in a wide range of prints and textures, wallpaper is a clever technique to showcase one’s personality in a showstopping and timeless way.”
One of the best things about wallpaper in current times (as opposed to the wallpaper your parents and grandparents decorated with) is that not only are the design possibilities endless, but the advent of peel-and-stick wallpaper has made this embellishment feasible for renters or anyone who wants to self-install.
Eat-In Kitchens
According to Dianne O’Connor, founder and CEO of Weston Table, we’ll see a lot more eat-in-kitchens in 2024. “Eating communally is one of life’s greatest pleasures and the kitchen is where it all begins. Kitchens are the soul of the home but are often thought more of as utilitarian spaces than high-design moments outside of hip appliances and built-in cabinetry.”
There are several reasons why these spaces are making a comeback, but one of the major factors is that many families are skipping formal dining rooms, according to a trend report from the National Kitchen & Bath Association. Since kitchens have become larger spaces in recent years, many homeowners are opting to take that extra large corner and build in breakfast nooks or banquettes.
O’Connor notes these are ideal spots to have fun with design. “Create an opportunity to add color and personality to a space. Paint the walls a color with personality, add accessories such as a designer fire extinguisher for a conversation starter, and invest in quality oven-to-table cookware that adds character to the kitchen and looks good stored out in the open or hanging.”
Muted Colors
Say bye-bye to bright. Lindye Galloway, interior designer and chief creative officer of Lindye Galloway Studio + Shop, reveals that muted colors are going to have a resurgence in the new year. Galloway says, “As we spend more time indoors, we want our home to represent a warm and inviting place. The mixing of these complementary colors creates a nice variety of hues that can be used in any space to create a look that ranges anywhere from cozy to chic.”
Margaret Donaldson of MDI Interior Design adds that darker hues will also be popular, particularly for cabinets and trim. “I have specified an eggplant color for a vanity in a primary bath recently, and a deep olive green for a study. Also, charcoal kitchen cabinets contrasting with white walls.”

Grandma-Chic
Grandmillennial style has been a big trend in recent years, but in 2024, Samantha Stathis-Lynch of Samantha Ware Designs sees this aesthetic becoming more of a grandma-chic look with a more sophisticated aesthetic (as opposed to a retirement community vibe). “Think cozy spaces full of patterns and subtle, muddy colors,” she says. “Expect to see checkerboard floors, but instead of the stark contrast between shiny black and white marble, try a honed Calacatta gold alongside a lagos azul limestone for that irresistible look without the slip-and-slide effect and glaring light reflection.”
Embellishments
Remember how big scalloping was in 2023? This concept is going next level in 2024, according to Donaldson. “Embellishments from the 80s and 90s are back! Trim, trim, and more trim. We are adding more fussy tassel trim to draperies, upholstery, and pillows. Using contrasting patterned fabric as edge detail and mixing patterns is huge.”
This is very likely something you’ll see on TikTok. Best of all, it’s something that’s an easy trend to get on board with. Adding embellishments to pieces you already have can be a fun weekend project.
