AD Small Spaces: A 1,000-square-foot Chennai home that cherishes ancestral memories

by

Upon entering the Chennai home, the space unfolds into a gracious living area that seamlessly transitions into the dining space, where expansive picture windows provide a scenic view of lush greens. Adjacent to the dining area, a curved moulded archway on the right introduces a luxe kitchen leading to a charming outdoor balcony. Nestled beside the living room are the primary bedroom and bath and a guest bed and bath, each opening to its respective balconies.

Greige-toned panelled cabinetry layered with a marble countertop and splashback that extends up to 2’ and classical brass hardware lend the kitchen a refined European aesthetic.

Unified by a palette of book-matched white marble accented with classic black marble trim, the family’s living space—encompassing the living, dining, and kitchen areas exudes a timeless aesthetic. Greige-toned panelled walls, complemented by period furniture, establish an effortless European aesthetic. The minimal palette is enhanced by pops of colour visible in the tiles, wallpaper, and rugs, while brass and sharp black accents provide a striking contrast.

Anchored by a mauve rug and abstract art by artist Madhuri Kathe, the living room of this Chennai home has a compact seating layout comprising a tufted moss-green velvet couch and a pair of classical armchairs placed around a round, marble-topped coffee table. The dining space comfortably seats six around the curved-edged table, complemented by a leather banquette and sleek dining chairs. Pieces like the recycled glass pendants or the Burma teak armoire add a ‘high-low’ contrast when paired with newer furniture and objects. Their unique patina adds a feeling of nostalgia, enhancing the overall aesthetic.

The primary and guest bedrooms have been meticulously crafted to serve as tranquil sanctuaries, heightened by a muted colour palette, soft, layered textiles, and delightful details. Lined with raw walnut wood flooring, the bedrooms instantly feel warm and natural. With blush pink walls, a metal canopy bed, brass wall sconces, and a vintage nightstand, the rooms emanate a cosy, old-school vibe. Deep green wall-to-wall cabinetry fulfils excess storage requirements, and a concealed door reveals a blush and green-toned bath. The guest bedroom is painted a soft dove grey and enhanced by brass accents.
