Award: Prince Albert Victoria Hospital new acute care tower
Value: $898 million Canadian dollars ($667 million)
Location: Prince Albert, Saskatchewan
Client: Government of Saskatchewan

Edmonton, Alberta-based PCL won a $667 million design-build contract from the government of Saskatchewan to create a new acute care tower at Prince Albert Victoria Hospital, according to a Feb.1 press release. The project includes a design and early works agreement the government awarded PCL in December 2022.

PCL will build a heliport on the roof of the tower, an expanded emergency department, larger operating rooms, pediatrics, maternity, neonatal intensive care unit, new medical imaging and a First Nations and Métis Cultural space, among other key services, per the release. The new structure will increase overall capacity at Victoria Hospital by 40%, from 173 to 242 beds.

“On behalf of PCL Construction and the extended design-build team, we would like to express how proud and excited we are to deliver the Victoria Hospital project for the Prince Albert, Northern Saskatchewan, and Indigenous communities that this hospital serves,” said Mike Staines, PCL district manager, in the release.

Throughout the process, PCL will engage with local and Indigenous vendors to deliver services on the job, the firm said. Early work includes a new parking lot, which will be paved this spring, per the release.

Construction of the new tower will begin in spring 2024, and officials anticipate it will finish in 2028.
