Sterling K. Brown is widely known as an award-winning actor, but the This Is Us star holds another passion: interior design. While renovating the home of his kids’ nanny during an episode of Celebrity IOU, Brown found joy in every part of the process—from demolition to making design decisions.
“What happens in my household is I give suggestions to my wife, and she vetoes,” the American Fiction star, who lives in Los Angeles, said in the episode. “So me actually getting the chance to have the say in it is fairly new.”
The Oscar-nominated actor teamed up with HGTV stars Drew and Jonathan Scott to upgrade his family nanny’s kitchen and dining area. During demolition, Brown noted how satisfying it was to break the counters and rip off cabinetry. “Gentlemen, that’s what you call a good time,” Brown belted after busting through a wall with his hands. He added, “Breaking stuff is awesome. It’s cathartic!”

When it came to tackling the design choices, Brown got even more excited. For the kitchen, he knew white counters paired with light wood cabinets would be better suited to the homeowner’s bohemian style and they’d make the space feel bigger. (Although, he noted the dark counter option was his personal favorite!) When choosing between two peel-and-stick grasscloth wallpapers for the ceiling over the dining area, Brown looked at the options with Drew via FaceTime. After selecting the one with a more subtle pattern because he thought it would “play better” on the ceiling, he made a request. “I would love to help you with the installation for that grasscloth,” he said. “Is it possible you can save a little bit of work for your boy?”
Drew happily obliged. And while Brown later admitted he’s not a “super DIY kind of guy,” he remarked that “it feels good to make a contribution into the life of somebody that you care about.”
While installing the wallpaper, Brown observed the powerful difference that details can make. He confessed, “I know it’s tedious doing all of this, but my god it looks good.” We couldn’t agree more.
The project clearly proves Brown loves to dabble in design, especially when it involves transforming a space for one of his loved ones. “I think beautiful people deserve to be surrounded by beauty,” he said.
