meet Plantonia Vegan Aparthotel in poland
Architectural firm krea.tina has transformed a historical tenement house in Krakow into Poland‘s first vegan aparthotel. The aim here was to preserve the building’s rich history while adhering strictly to vegan principles, eschewing materials derived from animals, and steering clear of unethical practices common in traditional construction. PLANTONIA stands as a trailblazing vegan accommodation in Poland, embodying sustainability and compassion in every aspect, down to the smallest detail. ‘Sometimes we don’t even know that a given material or ingredient is of animal origin. The best examples of this are adhesives and impregnations in everyday objects, such as beds and chairs,’ shared the team. To achieve this, krea.tina carefully opted for vegan-friendly materials throughout the design, from climate-neutral marmoleum to recycled carpets and repurposed textiles.

Embodying Veganism and Functionality
The krea.tina project called for fully functional kitchens in every room, presenting a unique challenge. To address this, the architects proposed repeatability within specially designed zones inside the hotel units. They systematically approached the task by defining unit types and specifying adaptable zones within each area. Despite differences in dimensions, the kitchen, dining area, bedroom, and other spaces were tailored for utmost repeatability. This guaranteed a seamless yet individualized experience for guests, seamlessly blending functionality with thoughtful design. Beyond functionality, the project aimed to embody the essence of veganism, not only through its culinary offerings but also in all facets of the guest experience. From the tranquil atmosphere of the lobby to the eco-vegan library and versatile workshop areas, each space reflects the values of mindfulness and ethical living. This meant ensuring that materials used were vegan-friendly, devoid of animal-derived ingredients, and not tested on animals, such as glues derived from animal bones, fabrics containing wool blends, waxes sourced from beeswax, etc.

The team carefully considered the implications of veganism in every aspect of the project. Despite facing challenges, including strict regulations for hotel buildings, the team sourced vegan alternatives for various materials, including wood, cork, and plant-based fabrics. This demonstrates that creating vegan interiors is achievable without resorting to unconventional solutions. The hotel offers 24 apartments ranging from 25 to 68 square meters, along with amenities such as a relaxation area, a vegan pantry, an eco-vegan library, and a multifunctional space for yoga classes and workshops. Additionally, guests have access to a gym, an inhalation room, and a 24-hour self-service laundry. The realization of the project required dedication and perseverance, resulting in a unique and innovative space that sets an example on a global scale.
