A joint venture of St. Louis-based McCarthy and Texas builder Vaughn Construction will build a $5 billion replacement pediatric campus in Dallas for Children’s Health, McCarthy announced on Feb. 8. The McCarthy Vaughn Partnership is billing the facility, which will replace the existing Children’s Health hospital, as one of the largest pediatric hospital campuses in the country.
The project will include 552 beds, which amounts to a 38% increase in inpatient capacity from the existing facility, through 4.5 million square feet of construction, per the release. It will also gain 15% more emergency department space and a 22% operating room expansion, plus the area for future growth. The new complex is meant to bolster medical services for North Texas’ rising population.
In addition, the new location will include a Level I pediatric trauma center with 90 emergency department exam rooms and 24 observation rooms, per the release, along with a new fetal care center.
“The new pediatric campus will be a critical hub to support ever-growing pediatric health care needs in Dallas today and well into the future,” said Michael Malone, MVP project executive, in the release. “We are thrilled to be able to bring our extensive health care construction experience to help build the spaces that will make a difference in so many young lives.”
This is another megaproject in McCarthy’s recent portfolio that the builder has taken on through a JV. In August, they were tapped alongside Minneapolis-based Mortenson to build a $1.5 billion Las Vegas ballpark, and in June, the two completed a $1 billion biosafety lab in Manhattan, Kansas.
Children’s Health anticipates construction will begin on the new campus in the second half of 2024, per the release. Officials believe the hospital will open in the next six to seven years.
