Providence, Rhode Island-based Gilbane Building Co. broke ground on March 21 on a new, $410 million project that will replace the current Cape Canaveral Hospital in Brevard County, Florida, the company announced.

Located on Florida’s Space Coast and barrier islands that abut the Atlantic Ocean, the structure has been engineered to withstand a Category 4 hurricane, and will be built 13 feet above sea level to withstand storm surges.

Construction is scheduled to finish by the end of 2026, with the hospital’s official opening slated for early 2027, per the release. Gilbane is partnering with St. Louis, Missouri-based design firm Lawrence Group, Chicago-based project management company Concord Group and Golden, Colorado-based engineering company BCER on the complex.

The new project will consist of a new hospital and medical office building, per the release. The 268,000-square-foot medical center will have 120 private inpatient beds, 25 emergency department treatment rooms and six operating rooms. The office will be three stories tall and 92,000 square feet. An on-site central energy plant will ensure a continuous power supply even during tropical storms and hurricanes.

The broader campus will also contain a three-deck parking structure.

Other construction firms are also working on big-ticket healthcare projects. A joint venture of St. Louis-based McCarthy and Texas contractor Vaughn Construction won a contract in February to build a $5 billion replacement pediatric campus in Dallas for Children’s Health, and a Turner Construction JV broke ground on a $550 million hospital in San Antonio, Texas in January.
