New data has revealed that our pets have an impact on our home decor decisions. A dog bed, cat tree, or rodent cage will all alter the look and size of a space, but owning a pet can also be a deciding factor of how a room will be furnished.
In a recent study, design simulation game Redecor found that 78% of dog and cat owners consider aesthetics when choosing pet accessories for their home.
“It’s no secret that pets are more integral family members than they ever have been in history, with many younger generations even choosing pet-parenting in lieu of having children,”Aino Heinäsuo, Head of Design at Redecor, explained to Forbes via email. “With that, pet-sthetics are continuing to impact the interior design world and really shaping the way people decorate their homes and spaces,”
One of the biggest design impacts for pet owners is furniture. Whether they want it to happen or not, pets are likely going to climb upon couches and chairs at some point. To minimize damage, opt for certain types of materials — 48% percent of respondents said that they have had to toss out a piece of furniture due to a pet, while 42% said they have intentionally not purchased an item for their home that they loved because they were concerned their pet would ruin it.
“When choosing furniture as a pet parent, the main consideration is often how much fur will stick to it,” said Heinäsuo. “However, it’s equally important to think about ease of maintenance and durability. Choosing pet-friendly materials is key to creating a stylish and safe space for your pets. Opt for easy-to-clean, durable options that resist pet hair and stains. Additionally, ensure the flooring provides adequate traction to prevent slips and falls, keeping your pets safe and comfortable,”

The best materials for pet owners includes leather, as it doesn’t trap fur, is easy to clean, and is generally resistant to scratches, and microfiber, a durable and stain-resistant alternative to suede. “Using furniture that serves both human and pet needs helps integrate these spaces harmoniously, ensuring your home is a comfortable place for both you and your pets to enjoy together,” Heinäsuo added. “There are many stylish pet decor options available that seamlessly blend into your decor, making your space both functional and beautiful,”
Additionally pets may also impact the amount spent on furnishing a home. With so many products on the market, from $7,500 designer pet beds to the more budget-friendly $10 cat huts, there are pet home products to suit every need. 12% of people said that they are willing to spend up to $500 on pet accessories for the home yet 23% will not consider spending more than $25; 85% wouldn’t shell out more than $100.
But what about the prospective pet owners; those who don’t yet own a pet but are hoping to do so in the future? 17% said they would choose a pet to match their already existing aesthetic.
“Overall, pets have become a huge factor in how we curate our homes,” Heinäsuo commented. “From choosing the most durable decor to selecting pet necessities that fit your design, pet owners are thinking carefully about the way their pets impact aesthetics.”
