Jonathan Taylor Thomas won hearts as a child artist in the 90s era with his remarkable performances in multiple projects.
The now 43-year-old had his debut as the voice behind 1994’s The Lion King’s young Simba.
Talking about the experience of working in the film that became a Hollywood icon, he shared with People, “I just put my natural energy into it. Real curious, fun-loving, always getting into mischief.”
He later went on to become a popular name in the industry at that time with Tom and Huck, Man of the House, Wild America and I’ll Be Home for Christmas.
He exited Home Improvement in 1998 to go back to school as he clarified during his appearance at Late Night With Conan O’Brien that November.
“Go to the football games on the weekend. That kind of stuff,” he told the host.
He had his priorities very clear.
“How serious do you take this stuff? I mean, you should be focused on doing a good job, but… every job has an end,” Taylor who was 14 at that time told Premiere magazine in 1996. “I think most [fallen child stars] weren’t prepared for the end. I mean, it’s not the end of your life! You can’t base your life around one thing.”
Despite the fact that Thomas had upset many people around him, including his dad, by moving away from the industry, he was sure that he made the right choice.
“I made such a good decision,” he shared in an interview at 1999 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, “because had I stayed at the show and tried to do academically what I’m doing now, I would’ve put myself in an early grave.”
He also revealed that he enjoyed living life away from the industry.
“You can’t be trapped in this bubble called the acting industry,” he mentioned. “The industry is neurotic and weird, and so when I go home and I play basketball with my friends, I’m not Jonathan Taylor Thomas. I’m just Jonathan. I don’t like hanging out with other actors and actresses.”
He learned the ‘technical side of [filmmaking]’ while he studied in school.
The actor went on to make some cameos, wore the hat of a director and stayed in touch with the behind-the-scenes part of the industry.
For the unversed, Thomas was last photographed publicly in 2021.
